Maryland Hotspot: Deep Creek Lake

Maryland has little hidden treasures making it a great state to be from and to visit. Deep Creek Lake is in McHenry, MD, an hour away from Morgantown, WV, home of West Virginia University. If you asked me which season I would prefer to visit Deep Creek during I could not choose. Ski slopes open in the winter, you can find yourself out on a boat in the summer, the ice cream shop is lovely for spring, and of course there is my favorite activity, horseback riding in the fall. I have been to two separate horseback riding stables here and both give a beautiful view for your money.

The best part of all, when staying in Deep Creek Lake, is which rental home you choose. Whether big or small, you can enjoy the lake life, which I like to call the relaxed life. Deep Creek is truly a Maryland paradise. Last fall we stayed in a home in the mountains decked with an indoor pool and jacuzzi, perfect for a night swim and a hot dip in 30 degree weather. In the fall our backyard was a ski slope but the year before the backyard lead right out onto the lake. You can only imagine the photos I took.
Deep Creek is the Maryland equivalent to North Carolina's Outerbanks, which I absolutely love as well. There is no comparing Deep Creek's mountain views and fresh air to the Outerbanks beach homes and ocean views. If you happen to visit Deep Creek, it is not a bad idea to visit Swallow Falls State Park, which happens to be about a 20 minute drive out. You will not regret it.
